Healthy Eating for Life to Prevent and Treat Cancer Healthy Eating for Life for Children Healthy Eating for Life to Prevent and Treat Diabetes Healthy Eating for Life for Women

The following review is from Natural Health Magazine, March 2002:

The seven-member expert nutrition panel of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a nonprofit organization of 5,000 physicians founded by Neal Barnard, M.D., offers a way of eating based on whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and legumes. If you follow their dietary advice, they say, "headaches can become a thing of the past, menopausal symptoms may never even start, and you can gain a new power over the most common and problematic forms of cancer." It sounds easy, but only until you realize that you must also eliminate everything else from your diet—dairy products, meat, poultry, and even fish. But fortunately, the last section of the book is chock full of interesting recipes that incorporate their strategy—for example, their delicious low-fat version of a BLT, which is made with tofu. Although women's health issues, like menopause and osteoporosis, are covered here, as the title promises, much of the book's nutritional information is relevant to men as well.

The following review is from Los Angeles, California's Woodland Hills Daily News, March 18, 2002:

Another Day, Another Diet

We've heard all about the high-protein diet, the high-carb diet and the grapefruit diet, but the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has put a fresh spin on dieting in its new book, "Healthy Eating for Life for Women" (John Wiley & Sons; $14.95). The organization's researchers discuss menstrual cramps, arthritis, urinary tract infections and fertility, with some surprising dietary ideas. For instance, readers will learn that a number of foods considered good for you can trigger joint pain. They list milk and corn and numerous others, but the trick is finding the food by trial and error. Once you've figured out what you should and shouldn't be eating, turn to the back of the book for recipes.

"I would recommend this series to all my patients. Good eating habits are the foundation of good health, yet most of us go through life never learning what this really means. PCRM's panel of nutrition experts clarifies it all—what scientific studies have revealed, why Americans have been losing the battle against preventable diseases, and how to regain control, quickly and effortlessly."
—Jerry W. Vlasak, M.D., F.A.C.S.

"Every day, science brings us good news about your power to control diabetes, and this book explains it. If extra weight is creeping up and your active life is slowing down, read this book! Easy changes you make today can help you prevent—and even reverse—this costly and often debilitating illness. Enjoy delicious foods and regain your good health before diabetes takes hold of your life. It's about time people stopped looking for gimmicks and started paying attention to what we know: good nutrition is essential to good health. Learn about it here."
—Michael Janson, M.D.

The following quotes come from participants of PCRM's 2001 Weight Loss Study who were assigned a vegan eating plan for 14 weeks. Many of the foods they ate are featured in the recipe sections of the Healthy Eating for Life series.

"Weight loss in itself is responsible for some of the exciting changes in my life over the last ten months. Shopping in the ‘Misses' rather than the ‘Women's' departments and fitting into subway seats with room to spare and watching the astonished faces of people who don't recognize me at first glance—these things would have happened no matter how I lost those 45 pounds. But it's the improvement in my physical and emotional well being that brings real satisfaction. After I switched to a healthy diet, my fasting blood sugar dropped from 132 to 85 in just three months. Within six months, my blood pressure had gone from 142/96 to 126/78. I feel great. I'm full of energy. I'm never hungry. I never feel deprived. I haven't become cranky and irritable as I used to when I was "dieting." And I love to look at my plate and know that everything on it is truly good for me!"
—Mary Ann

"After having been overweight my whole life, changing the way I eat has finally allowed me to maintain a healthy weight and a healthy lifestyle. Now, I eat so much better and am never hungry. I would encourage anyone to give it a try."
—Carole

The following comments come from participants of PCRM's 2001 Cooking Classes for Cancer Survivors, which include cooking demonstrations with vegan foods, much like the ones featured in Healthy Eating for Life to Prevent and Treat Cancer. Class instructors have contributed significantly to all four books in the Healthy Eating series.

"This PCRM class is perfect for helping someone desiring to follow a vegan diet. It makes vegan cooking and new ‘strange' foods easy to use and prepare into delicious meals. The class even helps the newly-vegan person be able to order meals from an assortment of restaurants. I loved it!"
—Flo

"Vegetarian cooking classes have been an eye-opener in my experience with foods. Learning more about the benefits of vegetables and fruits was worth every minute spent—an unexpected plus was the gift of camaraderie received from the instructors and participants alike. A feeling of belonging radiated throughout the class."
—Melba

"This is a wonderful class for beginners as well as experienced vegetarians. The instructors provide practical, logical advice and guidance in what to eat, what to avoid, and why! After taking this class, I feel more confident in making choices of what I should or can eat without feeling guilty or neglecting essential vitamins in my diet."
—Don

"A great mind stretcher. Lots of new ideas for menu items."
—Cynthia

"I was greatly impressed with the willingness of the instructors to go out of their way to help me find vegan foods that I might be able to incorporate into my diet."
—Robert

"The motivation from the instructors was the support I needed to turn the corner to better eating."
—Charlotte

"This was an excellent course. The information was valuable, the recipes delicious, and the interchange was fun."
—Dennis

"Everyone should be aware of the need for nutritious meals. This class has helped me reach this important fact. As a cancer patient, I was especially grateful to have participated in the classes."
—Bernadette

"This class was so much fun, and, at the same time, it was very educational. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone interested in maintaining or starting a healthy lifestyle. I loved it!"
