Vesanto Melina, M.S., R.D., was trained at the University of Toronto and the University of London. She has taught nutrition at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and at Seattle's Bastyr University. She was a coordinator for the American Dietetic Association's Manual of Clinical Dietetics and co-authored the nutrition classic Becoming Vegetarian (now in nine countries and three languages) and its companion volumes, Cooking Vegetarian and Becoming Vegan.

Vesanto Melina, M.S., R.D.Ms. Melina is widely known in print, television, and radio media. She is an internationally recognized speaker and has presented workshops on the topic of vegetarian nutrition to more than 2,000 dietitians throughout North America. A recipient of the prestigious Clintec award for leadership in dietetics, she regularly consults for government, industry, and individual clients.

Amy Joy Lanou, Ph.D., is director of the nutrition department at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), overseeing PCRM's Cancer Project, conducting clinical research, working with cancer foundations, and promoting a vegetarian diet among policymakers, dietitians, and researchers.

Amy Lanou, Ph.D.Dr. Lanou has taught courses in human nutrition, nutrition and exercise, and nutrition and aging at Ithaca College as an assistant professor and at Cornell University as an adjunct professor for six years. She has worked with T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D., at Cornell University as a nutrition writer and was managing editor of his newsletter and online journal, New Century Nutrition.

Dr. Lanou received her B.S. in Nutrition Science from the University of California at Davis and her Ph.D. in Human Nutrition from Cornell University. Her research was focused on body weight regulation and the control of food intake.

A former nutrition director for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), Patricia Bertron, R.D., has also worked as a clinical and renal dietitian in a teaching hospital in New Jersey, counseling patients with various health conditions including cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and diabetes. She has worked as a sports nutritionist for a fitness facility and currently teaches classes on weight control through a hospital-based program in New Jersey.

Patricia Bertron, R.D.Ms. Bertron received her B.S. in Foods and Nutrition from Montclair State University. She completed an advanced pre-professional practice program through Marriott Health Care Services in Trenton, N.J., and has been a registered dietitian for more than seven years. Ms. Bertron has lectured to undergraduate students at Montclair State University on nutrition and kidney disease. She has published articles on vegetarian diets in several scientific journals, has contributed to Natural Health magazine, USA Today, Philadelphia Inquirer, and many other print, television, and radio programs including Fox In Depth, Wisconsin Public Radio, and National Public Radio.

Kristine Kieswer is the staff writer for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a nationwide, nonprofit organization of physicians that promotes preventive medicine and addresses the many ethical controversies that surround outdated and ineffective research methods.

PCRM is involved in advocacy and education and also conducts clinical research, including breakthrough studies showing the effectiveness of cost-effective, nutritional approaches to diabetes, high cholesterol risks, weight loss, and menstrual pain. This new approach to Type 2 diabetes has allowed many patients to reduce or eliminate their use of prescription medications.

Kristine KieswerMs. Kieswer is the editor of Good Medicine magazine, PCRM's quarterly publication for member physicians and laypersons. Her freelance articles on vegetarian nutrition have appeared in Minority Health Today, Plus, Better Nutrition, Vibrant Life, Essence, and other magazines. She has a B.A. in Journalism from the University of South Carolina.
